At the southwestern end of the Virginia Peninsula, on the north shore of the James River, lies Newport News, the fifth largest city in Virginia. A well-preserved community, the North End, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. In downtown Newport News the Victory Arch sits on the downtown waterfront. The "Eternal Flame", which sits under the arch, was hand crafted by Womack Foundry's founder and president, Ernest D. Womack
The military is integral to the local economy with Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding being the largest employer. Newport News’ location on the harbor facilitates a large boating industry, which can take advantage of its many miles of waterfront. Newport News also serves as a junction between ocean and railway with the Newport News Marine Terminals located at the East End of the city. The U.S. Army base at Fort Eustis, the area’s second largest employer, and other military bases and suppliers contribute significantly to the economy. The third largest employer is the Newport News School System.
In addition to the military, the city's other major industries are shipbuilding and aerospace. Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company and railroad giant CSX Transportation, the modern Fortune 500 successor to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, are but some of the major employers. Additional companies headquartered out of Newport News include Ferguson Enterprises and L-3 Flight International Aviation.
Research and education also play a role in the city's economy. The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is housed in Newport News. The facility employs hundreds of people, and more than two thousand scientists from around the world conduct research using the facility.
